Ken: The 460 and 560 diesels were excellent on fuel. The gassers were terrible and not a very good tractor engines to boot. Those gassers were modified truck engines. At that time all IH R&D on tractor engines was going towards diesel. They believed the entire farm tractor business would be diesel. Quite frankly I did too. After trying to get the horsepower we were from 300, 400, 350 and 450, I couldn't believe any farmer would order a gasser. American farmers bought a lot of 460 and 560 gassers. Here in Canada it was different, we were paying 20% more for fuel. We went to diesel very fast, in fact I've only ever seen one 6 cylinder gasser in a tractor.
TA either works or it doesn't work. Once it slips on the low side it's toast, although it will continue to work on the high side. These have to be adjusted by the book, close doesn't count. They should be shifted quickly, never be allowed to free wheel in low.
