I also ran a diesel out of fuel once, and diesel mechanic buddy of mine showed me a neat trick. Soak a rag in gas, wring it out tightly, then hold it over the air intake while spinning the motor over....mine fired right up! I held the rag there until the motor picked the diesel fuel up.
