I'm not sure about the 4600, but if it's like my 4000, you may be confusing the rear axle/differential with the transmission. The rear axle/differential on my 4000 gets filled up to the fill hole, which is on the top right side of the pumpkin.
The transmission, on the other hand, has a fill hole on top, but the level hole is about 6 inches down the side of the tranny housing from the fill hole.
