OK, I'm going to answer my own question. The mechanic thought it sounded like a bad valve. He pulled the cover and checked, found nothing broken or loose. He checked the air cleaner, which was plugged with soot from an exhaust leak. New inner and outer air cleaner elements. Problem solved.
