With a pony motor, the ring gear will be a helical cut so the MT 40 or 42 with right hand rotation and helical cut 11 or 12 tooth gear will work. Ring gear replacement is not needed. .I just put a 40 MT on my D4 7U. .12 volt system works great now but I'll see how it is come winter.
The only time you'd use a starter with straight cut gears is to replace one that was on a Cat that never had a pony motor to start with.
Also, if your D4 s/n is below (I can't remember the precise number) somewhere around 19xxx, you won't be able to use glow plugs unless you change to a newer head. . the precombustion chambers for glow plugs will NOT fit the older heads! I just hit the starter and give it a sniff of ether at teh same time I open the throttle after it cranks for a few seconds and I see the oil pressure gauge needle move.
