The sealant isn't necessary if it's put together correctly. Alot of times folks think that "if enough is good then more is better" and all it ends up doing is pushing the gasket out- or the excess goes into places it shouldn't go into. Follow the standard torque values for whatever size bolts are used and use just the gasket and you should be fine.
