I am a volunteer manager at the Southeastern Railway Museum at Duluth Georgia. We recently reassembled one of the CAT D-17000 engines on our 44 ton GE diesel locomotive. After setting the valves cold and starting the engine, we noticed a knock coming from one of the heads. After surmising that it was caused by excessive valve clearance, we warmed the engine up and set the valves hot. The knock went away, but returned after the engine had run for a few minutes. Has anyone ever experienced this? Any ideas?
