Very interesting. This specific pony I haven't worked with--however have rebuilt cat D8 pony--most assuredly have clutch, disc type, with outer plate which has a small pin you can catch thru top to pull out and rotate disc to tighten or loose. Pinion assy itself has built in flyweights to to disenge I.E which diesel fires it overspeeds pony pinion, flyweights diesengage pinion. Imagine they're very similar--note other guys here I believe have this vintage exp.
?? why the slow wind down of BS to pony? Rebuilt cat engines 10 years--only slowdown I've seen like that was with severely pulled piston/liners and rod bearings grinding it down.
Note: most pony's have a clutch brake--pushing engage lever OPPosite direction brakes the pony pinion shaft so you can pull pinion engagement lever quickly to engage--keeps pinion from grinding on flywheel engagement.
SO the pinion will not engage the main engine and spin at this point?
Consider buying rebuilt mag for pony and getting that cooking first?
Is hyd pump turning--every pump I've ever seen are direct connect to ft timing or real aux gears, so spin you bet.
If valve open while spinning, if noise wasn't too high should have heard choofing at exhause or intake of sticking or bent valve.
If main eng still turning--can you watch front--to see if belts are dragging thru frozen alternator, water pump, idler gear or fan? I know you cranked her over slow but you did it from rear--did u notic front?
Front pulleys don't like it, but have cranked over with a medium size stilson when cannot get on bolt, works but not pretty.
Main engine compression release working?
Hope something here helps. CAVEAT I've been wrong before guys, feel free to correct me anytime. wg
