The term "dusted the rings" means he hasn't replaced his air filter in way too long a time and a 15L engine that needs it's air to run the way it should to make power has sucked air past the filter seal because the filter is plugged tight, gotten dirt into the engine and scored the rings. We've all seen the Cat engines with well over a million miles on them that still put the power out like they should. They do this because regular maintenance has been performed.
We've since pulled the head on this engine and found it's rings are in fact junk. Still enough cross hatching in the cylinders. Customer was very pissed but has since realized it's his folly. Engine is new enough all we did was re-ring the pistons- he's back on the road makin boost and (hopefully) learned a lesson that will last him a lifetime. We cut him a break on the labor cost' and time.
