Probably not an engine you'd see in the machines discussed here but I'd appreciated some advice.
Got a 3406e engine with coolant in the oil. Instaled a coolant system pressure checker and ran the engine to 190*f with 5 psi on the system. At 190 the presure climbed to 9 psi and held.
Drianed the (contaminated) oil, dropped the pan and put 12 psi on the system. No leaks observed from the water pump area, liner o rings or air compressor area and held the same pressure for approx 2 hrs. No external leaks either. Also did not notice any leaks from the left side of the engine- from inside, like on a c-12, from the cam area. Even barred the engine over until my arms got too tired to do it any more with no leaks. Weep hole on the water pump is dry. Truck/engine sat for a few years, has 400k original miles per ecm.
Did have a steady drip of oil from the sump pick up tube and wondered if this could be caused by an oil cooler going south. I know when the engine is running and the cooler fails it puts oil into the coolant, but what if the engine is shut down with presure on the cooling system and no oil presure? Could this be where my contamination is comming from?
