Thanks Hector but I have already checked that out and there appears to be no problem with the clutch/transmission. Both operate smoothly and have no signs of rust. I can't afford to just keep replacing magnetos at $600 each until I find the cause of the problem so I'm giving-up, unless someone has another idea.
