Brewster, I had taken the manifold off and noticed it. On top of the fact it would drink a gallon of oil about every five hours. Whats crazy is 3 and 4 were in great shape before dissassembly. I only removed them to replace the jug liner seals. I know how that big old piston and rod can get away from you during assembly. In fact my good friend was in the inspection area guiding the rod on the crank when I had one just fall in and squish his finger. It's funny you say old timers, cause aparently there was a very good cat old timer that just passed away around here about a year ago. I often wish I could have had the chance to pick his brain some. I did do the "cheatin" thing and dumped about eight of those engine restorer b.s. cans in the crank case and it actually slowed the tar down some.
I wonder exactly what that breakin in powder is. I do remember reading about that in one of the manuals. I might call cat and see if it still exist. I'm sure they want $100 for it if you know what I mean?
