The rings I broke, happened while inserting the piston into the liner. Your all thinking what I would have , if I had read this, but the piston slid in without tapping, which I might do with my wrist. They went in easier than a gas engine, but I felt it scratch and removed it only to see the broken ring(Deere). That gave me a headache.
I think its odd that its your #3. I'm waiting for some old timer to step forward and tell us whats up.
I had an Uncle Fred that worked on these, when they were new, for CAT and I wish he were still around to ask...
Did you take off the manifold to see which one it was, or is yours "making tar" around #3
