The engine should be stopped,the terminals are usually marked on the regulator,on most Delco regs the BAT is left,ARM middle and FLD on right when you look at it with the connections at the bottom,sometimes ARM can be GEN,you can also polarise the generator by puting power to the ARM or GEN on the generator itself.
