A machine with a power shuttle has a torque convertor in place of a conventional clutch and that is coupled to the shuttle which has two clutch packs, one for forward and the other reverse, the respective clutches are engaged hydraulically, the shuttle is coupled to a manual transmission,if you were loading a truck you would select first gear and put the shuttle in forward, fill the bucket, take your foot off the throttle, put the shuttle lever in reverse and put your foot down again and you are reversing,it is one of the things that should be checked when buying used that the machine has good power in forward and reverse when it is hot,the engine needs to be good as well, the other things like the swing tower on the backhoe need to be tight, all the pins need to be tight, the cylinders need to be dry and holding, the hydraulics need to sharp and responsive, take the wheels off the ground and spin them in high gear and then stop the engine and lisen for noise in the transaxle while it is freewheeling, brakes need to be able to stop you, general condition and appearance is important too as anything that has to be bought adds to the price.
Good luck
AJ
