If you read my post down below you'll see where I was coming from.

OK, so I figured out that the part I was describing before was in fact just the "drive shaft" of the tach drive assembly. The fact that I was able to just pull mine out clearly indicates there is no drive gear left on this thing so it's toast. Now I have to extract the entire drive unit from the block. I purchased a new one to see exactly what I need to do. Basically the tack drive is a just a press fit into the side of the block. The machine being 30+ years old I'd say it's not just going to pop out. Anyone ever take a tach drive out of one these things? Any special tools built for the job?
