I too am an old timer having worked all my life in the construction machinery repair business, the first thing now to be done is establish the firing order of the pump, take off the plate off the side so you can see into the cam box,get the engine to #1 to TDC on compression stroke, the #1 plunger will be up fully, turn the crank 180° #2 will be up fully, turn 180° again #3 should be up and that pipe should connect to #4 cylinder, turn again and #4 should be up and that pipe connected to #3 cylinder, your fuel injection shop should be able to test the pump,it may be out of phase and caliberation,I have no way of checking what the Simms # should be,it might be that someone changed pumps around thinking there was no difference.
Good Luck
