At least one of the times the cylinder rod broke it was packed with mud. It happened during May and we are in southern Ohio so it was probably not frozen. The backhoe is a 2003 580SM serial no. JJG0375537. This is one of those galling problems that happens often enough to not trust the machine around people but so rare you can't go out there and say "there that's what its doing" to someone who might know how to fix it.
Thanks for any help.
