Apart from draining the sediment bowl the fuel system should not be opened till after the engine has been started and run for a while, the fuel system on all diesels is air tight and the fuel that is in the pump will be ok for the first few minutes run, even if it stops you would not have to do any more than you have to do now as you have let the system air lock, you will probably be replacing the filters anyway so you may as well do it now,put on two new filters and bleed the air from the system,I can't remember a priming pump on the machine as it years since I worked on one but if it has one open the bleed screws and use it,if it does not have one fill the tank if you can and let gravity do it,first open the bleed screw on the filter and close when clear fuel comes through, then open the bleeder or the return line on the pump and tighten them up when you get clear fuel, you may have to loosen the injector pipes a couple of turns each and spin the engine over till they start spurting fuel, tighten them up and it should start.
