The inlet valve has to open and only does so when the piston is going down,as the piston starts coming back up the valve should be closed to create compression,if compression is escaping past the valve it either is not seating properly or the valve adjustment is too tight,if the camshaft lobe for that valve was worn it would not open the valve enough and that cylinder would be starved of air, black smoke and missing would be the symptoms, check the valve adjustment again and do it by firing order, you will need to put two chalk marks on the pulley 180° apart, get no1 piston to TDC, mark the pulley to the timing cover and put another mark on the pulley 180° away, set the two valves on no1 cyl, turn the engine to the next mark and set no3 cyl, turn on again to the next mark and set no4 cyl, turn again and do no2 cyl,to check the lift of the cam measure it,see if the pushrod comes up as high as the others,if so the cam would be ok,if not DUH,the injection timing should not be out if it is starting easy but it would not hurt to check it.
