When cranking over are you getting smoke out the stack,if so it not a fuel issue,I've had the problem with the engine starting first hit and instantly stopping,it would then take nearly a minute of turning over for it to start again, the cause was the lift pump leaking back and losing prime, the breather for the diesel tank is remote and as the filler cap is not vented the breather should be clean so a vacuum is not created in the tank, also check that the stop run solenoid on the pump is working proper,to test the lift pump for leakback take off the inline filter and the outlet pipe from the pump, make sure to hold the nipple of the pump while loosening the pipe or tightening it,with a piece of soft hose held against the outlet nipple of the pump and the other end in your mouth try to blow back,if you feel the air going away the pump is leaking back,if it is leaking put the hose against the inlet side and blow through the pump, there might be debris in the valve,do not use high pressure as the valves have very weak springs, try to blow through again from the outlet side,if the air is not going away it will not leak fuel back, don't forget the tank breather, its on the end of one of the three hoses going up from the tank.
