Seems to be a fairly common fault on all Case backhoes old and new the original weld splitting at the bottom of the barell, the way I do them is extend the rod so the piston is away from where has to be welded, take the hose and knuckle off and let the oil out,put something in the hole to keep the dirt from getting into the cylinder, vee out the crack with a grinder and reweld it with a 7018 low hydrogen rod,it is important to vee the crack all the way because if there is any crack under the new weld the oil will get into it and act like a jack and crack it again,so the secret of success is to get to the bottom of the old crack and fill it with new weld, make sure that the ground cable is attached to the cylinder you are welding on,I usually grind the paint from the other pipe knuckle and put it on there, switch off the isolator switch if you have one if not disconnect the battery ground.
Good luck
