thanks AJ ... my speculation now is that one of the shift rail interlock pins has possibly been broken with one piece jamming the shift rail preventing return to neutral with another piece jamming the transmission itself. I have been able to confirm (by removing the shift lever and visually examining the shift rail assembly) that the transmission is in 1st gear (not two simultaneously), and the 1-2 shift rail is thus preventing removal of the top cover.
Next step appears to be splitting the tractor and attempting to release the lockup by manipulating the input shaft --- plan B at this point is to somehow cut the offending shift rail so that the top cover can be removed. I have confirmed with Case that the center shift rail is available.
