Cannot say I remember a 1175 but do remember the 1150 from around the early sixties,was the 8th wonder of the world then,I have reclaimed hundreds of housings in gearboxes and final drive using the method you suggest and it always turned out ok as lots of gearboxes are made from such crap its about the only thing that can be done,I would not hesitate.
