Right, I had a mechanic out to it yesterday and between us we unhooked it off the tractor to inspect it properly.
From the rubber knob on top it twists this way and that, ending in a square section rod which passes through Two plates which go on to operate the actuation rods on the side of the box'
this square rod tails away onto a flattened end, the sides of which began square (Twenty years ago) but have now rounded off nice and shiny, so don't properly engage these actuator 'paddles'
Solution would appear to be either build-up and reform the worn edges or source and new one and hope the 'paddles' on the gearbox side can be adjusted to again correspond with new part
