My thoughts are confused,can't see why taking off the pump gear and putting it on again should make any difference to the engine locking up,usually the pump would shear its shaft if it binds up,did you turn the engine counter clock,I think you should have a look under the head in case there is something on top of a piston,it is hard to guess what could be be wrong.
