The shaft does not move back into the pump,the coupling that bolts onto the pulley should slide towards the pump on the shaft,if the splines are worn a bit in the coupling they get blurred and the coupling will not slide onto the shaft,take the pipes off the pump and remove the mounting bolts and move the pump out enough to get the belt in,then bolt things up again.
