I ended up removing the radiator shroud and the fan, then loosened the four 18mm bolts holding the pump in place, thereby finally giving me enough wiggle room for the belt to fit through. The coupling on it's own just wouldn't do. (&*%%#$#$%#^
Thank you for your help along the way.
BTW, I bought a Gates tensioner to replace the case unit, which is supposedly better? Part # 38504.
