According to the parts books, Moline began putting the live PTO / disk brake option on the U models during the 1952 model year. At the same time, they dropped the 3 pedal design and moved the left and right brake pedals to the left side of the tractor. A U model could still be ordered without live PTO, but it came with drum brakes rather than disk brakes.
