Did you use a coil with an internal resistor? An easy check is to manually check the spark. Remove the distributor cap, dust cover and rotate the engine until the points are closed. Remove the coil wire from the center of the cap. Using something nonmetaltic, move the points such that the points open and close. With the switch on, holding the coil wire about a 1/4 to 1/2 inch from a good ground, when the points are opened there should be a solid blue spark jump from the coil wire to ground. Cycling the points will give a good indication of coil performance. Then inspect the inside of the cap and inside the spark plug wire holes for cleanliness.
