It could be ignition trouble that's causing all the problems. The first thing to do is take one of your old spark plugs and set the gap to about 3/16 of an inch. Then hold the base of the plug against the head and check your spark. You should get a nice blue spark to jump across that gap. If you don't get that, then it could be the points or coil. But start with the cheapest parts first and don't just start throwing parts at it. It can get expensive. The 9N guys can tell you more.
