That's the first I've heard about them being notorious about blowing head gaskets. How you got yours was the same as how I got my '54 NAA. The low compression can be from valves no longer seating. It's probably time for a valve job, where you have to pull the head anyway, then you can see what you have. Do you have the I%T FO-19 service manual? They don't cost that much and are a great help.
