If it is a front mount distributor, the coils are known to be a problem. Not neccesary that tho. when it stops jump off and check for spark right away. If you have spark then you have a fuel related problem.
I don't know what a water pump would have to do with it dying unless it was getting real hot.
if you have no spark it also could be the ign switch.
