How much you lose will depend on the leak, but when running it will putting compressed gas into the water. and when not running it will put water into cyclinder.
make sure the problem with boiling over is just not caused by overfilling the radiator. water level should be just above the core. Do not fill to top. I would put a thermostat in it also.
head gaskets are not that hard to change. If you do take the head off make sure the head is not warped. use straight edge or take to a machine shop. I had to have mine ground when I blew a head gasket.
