Like Jim says don't overfill the radiator. Make sure the fan belt is not too loose. 1/2" deflection. There is a thermostat in the upper radiator hose. it may not be opening correctly or at all. about the only thing that can go bad in the water pump is the bearings and then the shaft would wobble around and really leak. I don't think a bit of gaskeet leak would indicate any problem with the water pump.
