As suggested I have checked everything mentioned and the overheating problem appears to be fixed along with the lack of power.
Everything works well until I run the engine over 1500 RPM and then it starts to miss and backfire. As I mentioned before I had taken the balance weights out of the distributor and loosened them up with oil as they were seized.
Just wondering if I did something wrong at that point.
