I would suspect that you have something wired wrong. all the starter switch does is provide a ground. I would go back to wiring diagram and double check every wire. the ignition switch is what provides to the power to the distributor. you should be able to crank the motor over without it getting any spark until you turn the ignition switch on. the starter solenoid just works whihle it is cranking, so if it is cranking over then the solenoid is ok.
