More info please! Do you have a Sherman Trans? you can only use a Sherman in neutral for any PTO work. Yes sharpened blades make a lot of difference. Also the front edge of the mower blades should be about 1/2 inch or more lower than the back. 1st gear in some situations may be too fast, then just take a smaller swath through the grass. Keep engine RPM to about 3/4 throttle.
