Wow! This is a good one. The clicking sound from the starter solonoid is typical of a dead battery or poor electrical connections. I'm wondering if the pop sound you heard was a last ditch effort from the battery cable connectons. No battery to the ignition, tractor dies. I would start at the battery connections, clean them and re-attach. See what happens.
