The very first thing I would do is check the distributor spark wires on the distributor. They should be 1,2,4,3. It is very common to connect 2 and 4 swapped. As to your cleaning and overhauling the carb., if you did not soak the disassembled carb, in something like Berrymans Carb. Cleaner then it's not clean. There are several small ports in the carb. that are not possible to clean any other way. These ports not being really clean will effect the carb. in the way you describe. Good Luck.
