Thanks Billy. So it is probably water? I'll jury-rig something for the rubber boot until I can get one ordered.

The manual reprint I have calls for "mild E.P. Gear Oil confirming to Ford specifications ...etc. etc. (SAE 80 for temp below 32 F). My local auto shop is managed by a good guy who rebuilds these things so I'm sure he can help me with the right stuff.

Sounds like you're saying I'll need a bit less than five gallons total so it shouldn't be too hard. Except my garage is not heated and it's a bit colder than freezing here in upper New Hampshire...not sure how to fix that...:8)
