8N wiring system

I just bought an 8N that has a 12 V battery installed, a positive ground and a generator. From the messages on this board it sounds like I have a wiring system problem. It appears a 12V system has a positive ground and a alternator. Tractor seems to run fine. Am I headed for trouble like it is?
