I used to run into this problem with "universal" dipsticks on diesel trucks . Empty the crankcase and change the filter . Fill it with the right amount less one quart . Run for a couple of minutes . Stop it and let it sit for 5 minutes . Check the oil with your new dipstick . Mark the spot where the oil comes up to . Add a quart and do it again . Mark the new spot . You now have full and one quart low . If you want to be perfectly safe fill the oil filter in the beginning but use that number in your equation .
