I got advise from an old farmer who told me that was caused by water getting in the gearbox at sometime and caused surface rust on some of the gears. He recommended draining the gear oil and replace it with dirty used motor oil and let it set a month or so. I tried that technique on my C-121 it did correct the problem. Since I have drained the dirty oil and replaced it with new clean oil and have been functional since. It looks like it could be a job to pull the transmission and then rebuild it. Good Luck! I know my C-121 has been a blessing for the most part. A true worker!
