In Reply to: Long Agribusiness LandTrac 300. Too good to be true? posted by Rick on Tuesday, December 09, 2003:
Obviously the 2000-2001 Long Landtrack 360 SEEMED to good to be true when my father-in-law purchased it back then. He never really put it through the paces a tractor must perform to to be truely called a GOOD TRACTOR! Continuing with my previous blog, when I contacted the local Farmtrack dealer in Shreveport, LA regarding my problem, I was met with accusations that I HAD to have run over something like a stump! I informed the man I had done no such thing and was backing and mowing my pasture with half inch sweetgum saplings and grass about 18 inches high. I called the Kubota dealer's service department and they said it sounded like a clutch gone bad but tha they did not work on Long tractors and had never but would try. Eventually on Saturday, I took the mower off the Landtrack and hook it up to my 51 Ford 8N and it worked fine even though I think it is too large (6 foot) for the little 23 hp Ford. When we got to the dealer, he tried to stop the PTO with his foot but could not. He said he thought it might be an oil seal that keeps oil pressure on the clutch for the PTO. He said he did not think it was the gear from the inhtermediate shaft to the PTO shaft because it di not make a popping sound. Unfortunately he said it did require spliting the backend of the tractor to find out the problem and it would be approximately a month before he could get to it as he had so many others stacked up to be "worked" on! (Does that tell you the maybe Longs break at a higher rate than some other brands?) Anyway, it has been narrowed down to one of three things (PTO clutch, oil seal or PTO gear) but any of which will rack up a bill of near $1000 +. Before I got down to the dealer with our Long, my Father-inLaw was down there talking to the main mechanic and he told him that the PTO gear could shear by going over a 8-10 inch fireant mound (we have them everywhere in LA), a limb, a clump of hay or grass or a stump. He had two that he had recently repaired and showed him what they looked like. Now comes the real disgusting fact about this whole mess - and that is the Long Landtrack 360 has only 73.4 hours on it!!!!!! This is, in my estimation and remember I am biased since I have the checkbook that will have to pay for this fiasco, inexcusable for a "modern tractor" to have such weak systems as this PTO and the previous comments of Richard on his tractors five frontends. I'm not going to be nearly so lucky as him where his dealer has been footing his bill, my dealer has no qualms about charging me fore this poorly built tractor. In conclusion, in this day and time of so much junk and hazardous products are coming out of China and the Far East, if a tractor deal seems too sweet to be true, IT PROBABLY IS!!!! CAVEAT TRACTOR!
