Suzue 170 Stuck in 4wd

I just purchased a used Suzue 170 and I can't get it out of 4wd. The previous owner never moved the 4wd lever in 5 years. I can move the lever to go to 2wd position but there is alot of resistance and nothing happens.
Any advice or information on how to correct this problem?
