You have probably found out by now that the engine does have to move forward. I have a 1983 model 2418 that I replaced the throwout bearing on. Remoding the sheet metal and the engine is sort of a headache. The clutch plate still had the machining marks from manufacture so it probably still has 50 years of wear.
