On the 9N,2N,8N discussion forum on this site I've read that the way to avoid getting oil on the brake shoes is to only top up the hydraulic oil to the bottom of the side inspection panels on the center housing. Just remove the bottom bolt on one of the inspection panels and top up the oil until it starts to leak from the bolt hole.
