Without double checking in my old age :-) my WD is #165 First In California's upper Sacramento Valley
(July 1948). I have had your problem happen twice. The transmission shifter lower end was worn on mine and allowed two gears to engage.
I very carefully, with low heat input, increased the width of the shifter lower end that engages the gears (been so long ago that I cannot fully picture without looking at the manual). First time not sure but second time I built up the lower end with hard facing rod. Again, very caefully letting "swiped" areas of the rod cool off between passes of the hard facing rod.
I squared up the sides and ends by light grinding or maybe filing. Does not have to be perfect but the lower end of the shift lever MUST FIT with just nominal clearance into the slot area of the transmissin which controls gear selection.
It has been perhaps 20 years since my second repair and no problem. Engine was overhauled for the first time perhaps 15 years ago and now has around 38HP. Used the WD45 1/2" longer stroke crank and 1/8" over size cylinder sleeves.
Bottom line: Putting more HP out with still no transmission problems. Hard facing of the lower end of the shift lever must have done the trick.
Pull a 7' rotray mower in tough going.
