Problems replacing clutch in D17 IV 75000

I'm attempting to replace the clutch and have run into problem finding a replacement part. Originally, I was shipped a clutch for the early D17 IV, and it didn't work. So, I returned it for a clutch to fit the later model D17 series IV - 70241255. The disc 70241255 is physically the same as disc 70232241, and neither of them will work in the D17 Series IV s/n 75297 gasoline tractor. With the possible exception of the fiber material, it appears that the same clutch is supplied for both the 70241255 (for s/n 75000) and the 70232241 (for s/n 75000).

Basically, the problem is this: the splined center hub is offset in these clutches - stands off the plate about 1/4-inch on one side and 3/4-inch on the other. In the new clutches, the 3/4-inch offset is
placed on the pressure plate side, but the old clutch has the 1/4-inch offset on the pressure plate side. This splined center hub is "flipped over" on these new clutches from the what the old clutch is, and will make contact with the transmission drive shaft, and bind the clutch against the flywheel if you install it. Also, every clutch they've sent has a 3/16-inch hole drilled in it which (according to the shop manual) indicates that the clutch is for a diesel tractor. I suspicion that these clutches are being manufactured as "one size fits all", and whatever differences (if there really were any) between gas and diesel, and early and late series IV is being ignored.

Does anyone know what my problem is with this clutch, and where I can obtain one that works rather than one that carries the correct part number but doesn't fit?

Thanks.
